Stockpiling On A Budget: Prior Planning

Creating a plan while stockpiling on a budget will help optimize your preparedness. My tips for this, besides plan ahead, are; catch sales when you receive an income windfall, optimize gift cards, split a Costco/Sam’s club membership and bulk items if you can, and purchase by unit price (but what won’t expire). Having this plan helps keep my anxiety at bay and be ready for an emergency, even as a minimalist.

Meat And Eggs

Canned fish is high in nutrients like protein and stores for long periods of time. Avoid heavy metals by buying skipjack or chunk light tuna (and smaller fishes) in pouches rather than canned.

Small farms and cooperatives offer large amounts of meat at discounts. Quarter and half animals are often available at a less expensive price per pound. Animals raised on smaller farms often are less toxic and contain higher nutrients as well.

More and more grocery stores are offering organic, grass-fed meats and pasture-raised eggs. If small farms aren’t available, often health food stores like Whole Foods, Sprouts/Fresh Thyme, etc. offer these organic meats and eggs.

For those near one, some Dollar Tree stores (in the United States), if available, offer a full serving of wild caught salmon and cod. Dollar Tree offers a limited selection of healthy snacks and frozen vegetables.

For those in rural areas hunting, fishing, and farming can provide inexpensive and high-quality meats, fruits, and vegetables.

Fruits And Vegetables, Nuts, Seeds

Store inexpensive and frozen fruits & vegetables for long periods of time (when electricity is available). Stockpile less expensive fruits and vegetables from farmers’ markets and other places when in season.

Sprouted nuts and seeds provide high caloric and nutrient density. I get things like bulk spices, sprouted seeds, and other healthy pantry staples at Thrive Market.

Thrive is a membership-based, online grocery store. Even with the yearly membership fee, I still save on pantry staples over Whole Foods. You can sign up for Thrive here. Stockpiling On A Budget: Household Essentials & Other Foods

Water is essential in an emergency preparedness plan. Get a pitcher or two to filter water and keep clean water on hand when necessary. I keep two of these pitchers with extra filters on hand.

Thrive Market also offers sustainable and recycled household goods. I bought a water bottle and a few other things. In addition to water pitchers, I also keep filled water bottles in my fridge in case of water loss.

Other household goods like toilet paper (if you use it) and cleaners, food storage, etc. can be stocked when on sale. Keeping an active inventory list is helpful in deciding if something needs to be restocked. Many note apps can keep checklists or other types of lists that can sync between devices.
