I recently shared another Matt D’Avella video with my partner recently. This video on the 5-Minute Rule really seemed to resonate with her. She found it to help with feeling overwhelmed, as well as anxiety and procrastination. I found it to help with all three of the previous feelings as well.
Sharing the video led us to a much deeper talk. A talk about growth, our future, hopes and dreams, minimalism, and other projects we are currently working on together.
What Is the 5-Minute Rule?
The 5 Minute Rule requires you to work on a small, specific task for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, you’re free to switch tasks. This rule often allows you to trick your brain into completing the entire task. D’Avella dives deeper into the details of the rule and theory behind it.

Incorporating the Rule into Daily Tasks
My partner could feel a huge weight lifted off her shoulders. The overwhelm of not completing big tasks has been a stressor in her life recently. As someone who is open about her chronic illness, sometimes even daily tasks can seem insurmountable.
Allowing herself five minutes to start a task and continue working on it or not is stress-relieving. The 5-minute rule has her excited about getting back into a daily routine. The rule also helps with hobbies and side projects she wants to work on. When deciding on how to spend leisure time, she can start a task for five minutes and then decide if she wants to continue or work on a different project.
I’ve also started incorporating the rule into my daily tasks. When I tell myself to start a task for 5 minutes, the anxiety of the task lessens. A fun way I’ve decided to change the rule is to use roughly two songs as my 5-minute timer. Keeping track with music makes the task at hand more calming.
The Future of the 5-Minute Rule
Will this rule become a daily habit in our lives? Will it help us fight the procrastination response? Only time will tell. For now, it seems like a simple crutch that will help us get through the day. Until we can live life on our terms at least. Our eventual goal. Our freedom of financial independence.
Perhaps we can incorporate the 5-minute rule together. We have several team projects planned for the near future.
